Man is a social animal, said Aristotle, and he needs people around to make sense of his life. One of the most important ways humans have developed for communication, which has given it dominance over all other creatures is language.
Though vital it may be for bringing us where we are today, language is not the only tool we use for communication, in fact, more than 70% of our communication takes place through what we call non-verbal communication.
To convey our needs, feelings, and intentions towards other people. And the most important tool we have for it is our face (the facial expressions, that is).
Paul Ekman was the first person who studied the importance of facial expressions in communication and developed his theory of seven basic human emotions expressed through our expression. These emotions, he said, are universal and can be expressed and perceived by each human on the planet irrespective of their cultural/societal background.
Though revolutionary, it does not encompass the whole spectrum of perception of others’ emotions as a mean of communication. For instance, it does not address the importance of context and surroundings in communication because how we perceive others is more than just through their facial expressions – it’s the tone of voice, our idea of speaker’s intentions, their relationship to us, their position with respect to us, and the ambience etc.
Here in this exhibition, we created animation based on those basic human emotions, paired with live improvisational music played on stage by our talented musicians. We hope that as you listen to the music and watch the animation, you will also be able to feel the emotions that we intend to evoke through our exhibition.
